Real life considerations for occupational therapists

There are many factors for occupational therapists to consider when using Wii games. An experienced clinician (personal communication, June 5, 2013) states "using Wii games provides therapists with another intervention tool under their belt". Based on my experience, in a busy occupational therapist practice, occupational therapists need to consider the staff/ client ratio and how much assistance the individual would require. Ideally you would not want to have more than four people and one therapist per session, as it can become quite difficult for patients to all have a similar amount of time on the Wii. Also ensuring all patients can see the screen when playing and see a cartoon version of themselves on the screen, moving as they move.
You can facilitate group or individual sessions with patients. Evidence from Mundy & Hiller, (2010) reiterates the point about getting the staff and client ratio correct to ensure patients receive the best treatment.
I do acknowledge that Wii games are not appropriate for all patients, especially patients with dense heavy weaknesses due to their cognitive, visual and perceptual issues.

I would like to thank an experienced clinician, who was my occupational therapy supervisor on my placement, for sharing her experiences of facilitating and using Wii games as an intervention tool for patients.

  1. I was diagnosed with COPD four years ago and struggled with worsening symptoms despite inhalers and medications. Last year, I tried an herbal treatment from NaturePath Herbal Clinic, and within months, my breathing improved, coughing subsided, and my energy returned. It’s been life-changing. If you or a loved one has COPD, I highly recommend their natural approach.
